The Smug Creek Story

Mike Shadrack and Kathy Guest began building gardens on this wonderful piece of property in Western New York in 2005, shortly after they married. Kathy had gardened nearby for over 25 years and her passions included collections of iris, daylilies and hundreds of other perennials and bulbs. Mike, who is from London, England, was a hosta grower, collector and hybridizer. His love of shade plants complemented Kathy's eclectic gardens.

Smug Creek Gardens reside on rather a unique wooded property. A shallow slate creek, after which the gardens are named, flows in a wide gentle curve through the gardens and then directly under the house. It emerges from the front of the house and falls into a deep ravine. In all there are thirteen wooded acres upon which the Shadracks have created four different gardens surrounding the house.

The gardens contain hundreds of hostas and daylilies as well as various irises, lilium, arisaema, specimen trees, spring ephemerals and many other bulbs and perennials.
